Book Review Monday: Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Daughter of Smoke and Bone, by Laini Taylor

Book description: Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious “errands”, she speaks many languages – not all of them human – and her bright blue hairactually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.

When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

My review: Loved it. This was such a great book, one you just want to sit down and lose yourself in. And my life hasn’t been the most relaxing lately, so anything that makes me want to sit down totally gets my vote as a good book.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone was a little bit sexy, a little bit fantasy and completely fantastic. The characters totally didn’t annoy me (although side note – is it a good thing that I consider “not annoying” as a perfectly acceptable character trait nowadays. I read so many books where I just want to slap everybody upside the head … sigh). The whole book, even the parts set in “our world” where a bit fantastical, like a 17-year-old living in a bohemian apartment in Prague … c’mon. That’s every girl’s dream.

My favourite part of this book is that Laini Taylor raised all kinds of impossible questions – and answered them all, in such a satisfying way. This is one of the few times where the world she’s created, the answer as to why everyone is where they are, is even better than the one I thought it would be. Again, loved it.

As a note to readers, this lifestyle junkie is heading out on a vacation, to sunny, tropical Toronto … well, to Toronto anyway. I’ll be back in a week and a half, and I’ll start up blogging again.
